Chapter 1
At the Beginning
Around the cookfire last night, the faces of we villagers were
illumined more so by the Full Moon.
The animals for whom sight is a weapon at night were more busy than
usual. Their prey found it more difficult to hide.
The faces of we villagers showed fear of the predators making their
way into our midst. The fear spread from face to face as we all
huddled closer to the fire and tried to concentrate on the story-telling
and singing; some sought to brace and distract themselves with
passionate dancing.
But many glanced behind us, into the relative darkness beyond our
flickering fire, and imagined, as only we humans can, the fangs of the
tigers emerging from the jungle shadows.
